Republicans Block Veterans Benefits Bill

AP reports on the GOP’s successful filibuster of Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders’ veterans benefits bill:

Senate Republicans have blocked a Democratic bill that would enrich health, education and job-training programs for the nation’s 22 million veterans.

And why did Republicans—who “won” the vote because “only” 56 senators voted in favor of moving forward with the bill—decide to block it?

Republicans complained that the bill was too expensive. And they were upset that Majority Leader Harry Reid prevented a vote on a GOP amendment cutting the bill and adding sanctions against Iran for its nuclear program.

Ah yes, we mustn’t be too generous when it comes to the people we ask to defend our country with their lives. Especially not when we’re not even able to have a vote on an unrelated piece of legislation, even if that unrelated piece of legislation would make it more likely that we’d send even more veterans to their death, as their Iran sanctions bill would do.

Lovely Republican Party, eh?

~~New Health Rankings: Of 17 Nations, U.S. Is Dead Last~~

Americans are sick and getting sicker. Researchers were surprised to find a “strikingly consistent and pervasive” pattern of poorer health at all stages of life, from infancy to childhood to adolescence to young adulthood to middle and old age.

Compared to people in other developed nations, Americans endure some of the worst rates of heart disease, lung disease, obesity, and diabetes.

What do Americans have in common?

Could it be that 80% of the food we eat has been polluted with genetically modified organisms that have foreign genes forced into their DNA to allow them to withstand heavy dousing with toxic herbicides? Or perhaps it is the fact that much of our so called “food” is actually an EPA registered pesticide?

We’re dying to know!

Where do you think the future of our food supply is headed?

Control Food and you control peopleWhere do you think the future of our food supply is headed?

My thoughts…

  • Most of our country’s food supply system has become extremely commercialized, with the majority of our food being mass-produced, highly processed, and packaged using massive amounts of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, antibiotics, hormones, and toxic packaging
  • Large Chemical/Biotech corporations (manufacturers of products like Roundup, Agent Orange, DDT) are taking over our food supply and genetically modifying their seeds to include these pesticides and insecticides in their genetic makeup
  • These same large Chemical/Biotech corporations are buying, hoarding, and patenting all the seeds to be used for our future food supply
  • Big Agri corporate farms are driving our independent and family farmers out of business

I think the future of our food supply is going to be in the hands of

who care for nothing but making more and more profits.

Why Anti-Intellectualism Is Dumb

In 1642, the Puritan John Cotton said, “the more learned and witty you bee, the more fit to act for Satan will you bee.” Today, more than three and a half centuries later, sound science is questioned and the study of the humanities is ridiculed.

The golden eras of the great empires of Greece, Rome, China and India, were marked, in part, by artistic and musical expression, literary and poetic output and philosophical and scientific advancement. These ventures were funded by governments and the wealthy and were celebrated globally.

Today, nearly a quarter of adults in the U.S. believe that climate change is not happening. Twenty-eight percent haven’t read a book in the last year. And a third don’t believe in evolution. Disbelief may be relatively benign, but many, particularly in the GOP, actively deride and mock scientific theories and the study of humanities — an unsettling era of anti-intellectualism that has serious consequences in the struggle to keep our position as a country that innovates, creates, and discovers.

Origins of Anti-Intellectualism

In 1963, Richard Hofstadter wrote about anti-intellectualism in the U.S. In 2008, Susan Jacoby updated Hofstadter’s work, arguing that the GOP has made the word ‘intellectual’ taboo, much like “liberal” — odd for a country whose last 100 years is a history of awe-inspiring technological, scientific and artistic innovation.

This decline in support for education and for intellectual pursuits — both rhetorical and otherwise — isn’t so hard to believe in a country where a serious presidential contender — Rick Santorum — called President Obama a “snob” for wanting “everybody in America to go to college.”

Aspartame – Enjoy Your Daily Dose of Sugar-Free NeuroToxic Poison

Aspartame Brain damageAspartame, also known as NutraSweet and Equal, is one of the most widely used artificial sweeteners on the market today. It is used in thousands of foods and beverages including chewing gum, candies, diet soft drinks, desserts, yogurt, condiments, and even vitamins and pharmaceuticals.

Astonishingly, although millions of people consume Aspartame every single day, it was never tested on humans prior to its approval.

First introduced in the 1980s, Aspartame has constantly been linked to a broad range of health problems. In a report by Dr. Joseph Mercola, he wrote that “Aspartame accounts for over 75 percent of the adverse reactions to food additives reported to the FDA.” Here’s just a few of the over 90 different documented symptoms listed in the report as part of Aspartame dangers:

Headaches/migraines, Dizziness, Seizures, Nausea, Numbness

Muscle spasms, Weight gain, Rashes, Depression, Fatigue

Irritability, Tachycardia, Insomnia, Vision problems, Hearing loss

Heart palpitations, Breathing difficulties, Anxiety attacks, Slurred speech

Loss of taste, Tinnitus, Vertigo, Memory loss, Joint pain

Still drinking that diet soda?

According to researchers and physicians studying the adverse effects of Aspartame, the following chronic illnesses can be triggered or worsened by ingesting of Aspartame:

Brain tumors,  Multiple sclerosis,  Epilepsy

Chronic fatigue syndrome,  Parkinson’s disease,  Alzheimer’s

Mental retardation,  Lymphoma,  Birth defects

Fibromyalgia,  Diabetes

Still adding that packet of NutraSweet or Equal to your coffee?

Dr. Mercola has called Aspartame:“By Far the Most Dangerous Substance Added to Most Foods Today.”

AspartameSo what exactly is Aspartame?  Aspartame is a methyl ester of the dipeptide of the natural amino acids L-aspartic acid and L-phenylalanine.

When Aspartame is digested, the body breaks it down into aspartic acid, phenylalanine and methanol” – and it is methanol that is one of the root problems with Aspartame. When consumed via Aspartame, methanol is free to break down to toxic formaldehyde, and humans are incapable of converting the toxic formaldehyde into harmless formic acid (unlike other animals). To summarize, the methyl alcohol travels through your blood vessels into sensitive areas, such as your brain, that are loaded with ADH, which converts methanol to formaldehyde. And since there’s no catalase present, the formaldehyde is free to cause enormous damage in your tissues.

All you really need to know is this:

Aspartame is the excrement of genetically modified E. coli bacteria.

Wait… Read that previous sentence again. That’s right, GMO “E. coli bacteria!”

Aspartame Baby Drinking Diet CodeA study conducted jointly with Harvard Medical School and published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, found that drinking as little as one diet soda sweetened with Aspartame per day could cause an increased risk of leukemia and lymphoma in adults. Now, how many children do you see drinking diet sodas every day?

And to whom do we have to thank for giving us Aspartame?

Donald RumsfeldDonald Rumsfeld.

That’s right…The Donald Rumsfeld of “war on terror” and “weapons of mass destruction (WMD)” fame.

By 1979, FDA investigators and independent scientists agreed there was no doubt, based upon objective analyses of evidence that had accumulated for over a decade, that Aspartame was deathly poisonous to lab animals and caused a statistically significant number of them to develop brain tumors. On September 30, 1980, the FDA concluded that Aspartame should not be approved and that the FDA “has not been presented with proof of reasonable certainty that aspartame is safe for use as a food additive.”

Enter Donald Rumsfeld, who had become the CEO of G.D. Searle, manufacturer of Aspartame.  At Searle, Rumsfeld was on a mission to force the FDA to approve Aspartame for human consumption – a known carcinogen and neurotoxic poison.

Rumsfeld, while still CEO at Searle, was part of Ronald Reagan’s transition team after he was sworn in as president in 1981. This transition team hand-picked Dr. Arthur Hull Hayes, Jr., to be the new FDA commissioner. Dr. Hayes, a pharmacologist, had no previous experience with food additives before being appointed director of the FDA. One of Hayes first official acts as FDA chief was to approve the use of Aspartame as an artificial sweetener in dry goods in 1981. In 1983, just before leaving office in scandal, Hayes approved the use of Aspartame in beverages. Ultimately, when G.D. Searle was absorbed by Monsanto in 1985, Rumsfeld reportedly received a $12 million bonus for his efforts.

So, because Rumsfeld placed politics and greed above public health and safety, Aspartame has enjoyed over 30 years of marketplace success and is now in an estimated 9,000 commonly-consumed products in at least 100 countries. Meanwhile, adults and children continue to consume Aspartame-sweetened products on a daily basis, unaware of the dangers they are digesting. Example: Just try to find a package of gum that doesn’t have Aspartame…

And we wonder why we have some many unexplained illnesses and diseases.
